In order to assist homeowners with deciding if a PV system is a good investment for their roof, the University of NSW have developed a tool to help, called the Solar Potential Tool. Based on a shape you draw on your roof from a satellite imagine, the tool calculates your expected energy production, including the effects of weather and shading from nearby sites, and how tilt and panel orientation will affect the performance.
It will only work where the tool has data (the orange looking overlay in selected cities).
The website has some other interesting data as well, including information on what postcodes have the most solar installed, the growth in installed solar capacity to date since 2001, and live tracking (courtesy of SMA’s Sunny Boy Portal database) showing over the day how much generation has come from each state and postcode.
